Passive surface control can be one part of a broader heat-management strategy for large buildings. The review should account for occupancy, ventilation, insulation, process heat, and local climate.

The common heat challenge

Large exposed roof areas can contribute to interior heat gain where ventilation or mechanical cooling is limited.

Typical surface: Prepared metal, concrete, or masonry roof and wall surfaces

Preliminary note: Project review required for occupancy, roof construction, insulation, ventilation, climate, and operating goals.

Large area does not mean simple

The same roof can cover occupied zones, storage areas, process spaces, and ventilated bays. The application should be mapped to how the building is actually used.

Insulation and airflow still matter

Existing insulation, roof vents, fans, open doors, and internal loads influence the relationship between roof temperature and interior conditions.

Know the passive limit

A surface coating does not create conditioned indoor air. Projects should define whether the goal is surface control, lower heat gain, improved comfort conditions, or a feasibility study.

Indicators of potential fit

  • The roof and existing layers are documented
  • Solar exposure contributes materially to the heat problem
  • Ventilation and insulation conditions are known
  • The project team can define the desired outcome

Conditions requiring technical review

  • Animal, food, or hygiene requirements
  • Unknown condensation or moisture behavior
  • Significant internal process heat
  • Expectation that a coating will replace required ventilation or mechanical cooling
